The island hopping campaign was succesfully used by General Macarthur. They literally hopped from island to island. He would take over islands that had little resistance and skipped the islands that had a large Japanese presence on them. By doing this he was able to isolate the islands that had a large amount of Japanes soldiers on them. They became neutralized because they were cut off from the rest of the Japanese military. As the island hopping campaign got closer and closer to the Japanese islands the more fierce the fighting became. Iwo Jima showed the military leaders of the United States how hard it was going to be to get to the Japanese islands. Iwo Jima saw some of the bloodiest fighting of World War II. The Americans lost more soldiers in this battle than any other of the war up until this time. Unfortunately there was another battle shortly after this that was even bloodier. | This would be the first time that the A-bomb was used in war. It was used on August 6, 1945 on the city of Hiroshima. Three days later another was droped on the city of Nagasaki. Most Historians agree that the bomb was necessary to save human lives. The closer the United States came to the Japanese islands the more deadly it was for the Americans. It was estimated that a full scale invasion of the islands would cost up to one million American lives. Not only that, but up to two million Japanese could have died in the invasion as well.
